The story

One little parrot, one enormous blue sea to learn.

Deep in a green and dripping rainforest lived a little scarlet macaw named Pete, cherry-red, sunshine-winged, with the biggest, most wondering eyes. What is out past all these trees? he always whispered. So one bright morning he opened his little wings and flew, over the treetops, over the hills, to the very edge of everything, where the green runs out and the whole world turns to water. And there, smooth and gentle as a hill, a great kind whale rose up to meet him, and gave him a tour of the whole wide sea: a coral reef like a little city, a silver school of fish, leaping dolphins, a hiding octopus, drifting jellyfish, the tiny krill that feed the biggest animals on earth, the dark deep where a little fish makes her own light, and a wise old turtle who says the sea has room for everyone.

Pete’s little song

“Hello, hello!” “The sea, the sea!” “What else, what else?” “Little light, little light”

Pete is a parrot, so he repeats what he loves, and keeps begging the gentle whale to show him more: “What else, what else?” By bedtime he understands why, because some things are so good you have to say them twice.
